Nowadays if you like a particular Science Fiction series you can go to a specialist shop and buy everything from posters to houseslippers based on the show. Novels, episode guides, background information and photographs are easy to come by. But in the days before the post-STAR WARS Sci-Fi boom there was very little of this merchandising around. What little TIME TUNNEL merchandise there was in the States totally failed to show up in England (or at least the part of England I lived in back then). My first break came in 1977, when I discovered a book called "Fantastic Television," by Gary Gerani and Paul H. Schulman. I couldn't believe my luck – the book contained a TIME TUNNEL episode guide, background information and even photographs! Until that time I had never seen a TIME TUNNEL picture in print! In 1983, I finally got to see the pilot episode of TIME TUNNEL, "Rendezvous with Yesterday," at a Science Fiction convention. At last I found out how Tony and Doug's adventures began. Soon afterwards THE TIME TUNNEL returned to British television screens. With the advent of cable, satellite and now digital channels, television schedulers are glad of classic shows such as THE TIME TUNNEL with which to fill their programming hours. It was quite amazing to me, a few years ago, to see THE TIME TUNNEL showing twice a day, five days a week, on the Sci-Fi Channel.

There is no denying that THE
TIME TUNNEL has dated – but so have I. This should not be considered a bad
thing. THE TIME TUNNEL is a true television classic, which, like a fine wine
gets better with age. Today's Science Fiction television has got stuck in a
rut, there are no original ideas and everyone is copying everyone else. Even
the STAR TREK franchise is looking increasingly tired and could do with a
decade off to recover.
